Microscopic Structural Condensed Matter Physics Group

We are doing structural condensed matter physics.

Origins of various properties of materials are examined 

from atomic arrangements, 

which are clarified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction.

What is the reason why we can learn the materials' property from the structure?

Think about the force F applied to an atom at position r.

F is the r-derivative of U, the total energy of the solid.

Let us assume the atomic position r is shifted a little. 

If U increases, the displacement is pushed back,and

if U decreases, the displacement is enhanced.

U is affected not only by the elastic interaction, 

but also by magnetism or other various electronic properties.

This is the reason why we can learn a lot from atomic arrangements.
